Dr George Nash

George is an Associate Professor at the Geosciences Centre, University of Coimbra (IPT), where he teaches landscape theory, prehistory, art, and European heritage policy, alongside supervising MA and PhD research. He previously lectured at the University of Bristol for nearly two decades.

With over 30 years’ experience as a Principal Archaeologist in the commercial heritage sector, George has led major projects across Britain and internationally — from Westminster Hall and Arthur’s Stone to fieldwork in Romania, Namibia, Chile, Israel, and Brazil. He is a full member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and has published extensively, with more than 35 books and over 140 academic papers covering prehistoric art, mortuary architecture, and post‑medieval heritage.

George has also contributed to numerous television and radio programmes, including BBC’s The Drawings on the Wall, and co-directs the long-running Tilley Timber Project, one of Britain’s largest dendrochronology studies. He is co-organiser of the British Rock Art Group (BRAG) and co-founder of The 1902 Committee, an international platform dedicated to global rock art research.
